Hosea 1:1-2:1; 3:1-5 | Rev. Blake Arnoult

Order of Worship

July 27, 2025

*Call to Worship | Revelation 1:5-7 | Rev. Blake Arnoult

God invites and calls us into his presence to worship him.

5 To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood

6 and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. 7 Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.

*Song of Adoration | Arise O God

We begin by responding with praise to God for who he is and for what he does.

Arise O God and shine

in all Thy saving might

And prosper each design

to spread Thy glorious light

Let healing streams of mercy flow

That all the earth Thy truth may know

Bring distant nations near

To sing Thy glorious praise

Let every people hear

and learn Thy holy ways

Reign mighty God assert Thy cause

And govern by Thy righteous laws

Send forth Thy glorious pow'r

That all the world all may see

And earth present her store

in converts born to Thee

God our own God Thy church O bless

And fill the world with righteousness

To God the only wise

the one immortal King

Let hallelujahs rise

from every living thing

Let all that breathe on every coast

Praise Father Son and Holy Ghost

Music and Lyrics: William Hurn

*Confession of Faith | 1 Peter 2:9-10; Romans 9:23-26

With the church in history we confess a basic statement of what Christians believe.

1 Peter 2:9-10

9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Romans 9:23-26

23 in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory— 24 even us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles? 25 As indeed he says in Hosea,

“Those who were not my people I will call ‘my people,’

    and her who was not beloved I will call ‘beloved.’”

26 “And in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’

    there they will be called ‘sons of the living God.’”

*Song of Confession | Jesus Lover Of My Soul

Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs are simply prayers that are sung. We respond in repentance and praise for God’s redemptive work in Christ.

Jesus, lover of my soul,

Let me to Thy bosom fly,

While the nearer waters roll,

While the tempest still is high.

Hide me, O my Savior, hide,

’Til life’s storm is past;

Safe into the haven guide;

Receive my soul at last.

Other refuge have I none,

I helpless, hang on Thee;

Leave, oh leave me not alone,

Support and comfort me.

All my trust on Thee is stayed,

All help from Thee I bring;

Cover my defenseless head

In the shadow of Thy wing.

Thou, O Christ, are all I want,

Here more than all I find;

Raise the fallen, cheer the faint,

Heal the sick, and lead the blind.

Just and holy is Thy Name,

I am all unrighteousness;

False and full of sin I am;

Thou art full of truth and grace.

Plenteous grace with Thee is found,

Grace to cover all my sin;

Let the healing streams abound;

Make and keep me pure within.

Thou of life the fountain art,

Let me take of Thee;

Spring Thou up within my heart;

For all eternity.

Music and Lyrics: Charles Wesley

Confession of Sin | Based on Colossians 3:5-13

We fight the temptation to hide our sin and instead acknowledge it openly to God, but we do so in light of the grace offered in Jesus.

God, our Father, help us to put to death what is earthly in us: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these your wrath is coming. In these we too once walked, when we were living in them. But now we must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from our mouths. We must not lie to one another, seeing that we have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of you, our Creator. Here, in your church, there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all. Help us to put on as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven me, so I also must forgive.

Assurance of Pardon | Colossians 3:2-4  | Rev. Blake Arnoult

The good news of the gospel is that we are forgiven in Jesus Christ. This assurance is based on God’s words of promise and it is therefore certain.

2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

*Song of Response | Come Ye Sinners

We respond in repentance and praise for God’s redemptive work in Christ.

Come, ye sinners, poor and wretched,

Weak and wounded, sick and sore;

Jesus, ready, stands to save you,

Full of pity, joined with power.

He is able, He is able;

He is willing; doubt no more.

Come ye needy, come, and welcome,

God’s free bounty glorify;

True belief and true repentance,

Every grace that brings you nigh.

Without money, without money

Come to Jesus Christ and buy.

Come, ye weary, heavy laden,

Bruised and broken by the fall;

If you tarry ’til you’re better,

You will never come at all.

Not the righteous, not the righteous;

Sinners Jesus came to call.

Let not conscience make you linger,

Nor of fitness fondly dream;

All the fitness He requires

Is to feel your need of Him.

This He gives you, this He gives you,

’Tis the Spirit’s rising beam.

Lo! The Incarnate God, ascended;

Pleads the merit of His blood.

Venture on Him; venture wholly,

Let no other trust intrude.

None but Jesus, none but Jesus

Can do helpless sinners good.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

We offer our gratitude to God in prayer in response to his gifts and blessings to his people and ask that he make us faithful managers of these gifts.

Song of Thanks | Doxology

As we offer our prayers so we also offer up our thanks in song.

Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow;

Praise Him, all creatures here below;

Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Amen

Prayer for Christ’s Church

We lift up our requests to God knowing that he hears us when we pray.

*Reading of Scripture | Hosea 1:1-2:1; 3:1-5 | Rev. Blake Arnoult

God reveals himself and his work and speaks to us his people through his Word.

1:1-3 Old Covenant Indictment

1 The word of the LORD that came to Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel. 2 When the LORD first spoke through Hosea, the LORD said to Hosea, “Go, take to yourself a wife of whoredom and have children of whoredom, for the land commits great whoredom by forsaking the LORD.” 3 So he went and took Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son.

1:4-6 Old Covenant Judgment

4 And the LORD said to him, “Call his name Jezreel, for in just a little while I will punish the house of Jehu for the blood of Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel. 5 And on that day I will break the bow of Israel in the Valley of Jezreel.” 6 She conceived again and bore a daughter. And the LORD said to him, “Call her name No Mercy, for I will no more have mercy on the house of Israel, to forgive them at all.

1:7 New Covenant Proclamation

7 But I will have mercy on the house of Judah, and I will save them by the LORD their God. I will not save them by bow or by sword or by war or by horses or by horsemen.”

1:8-9 Old Covenant Judgment

8 When she had weaned No Mercy, she conceived and bore a son.   9 And the LORD said, “Call his name Not My People, for you are not my people, and I am not your God.”

1:10-2:1 New Covenant Proclamation

10 Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be like the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or numbered. And in the place where it was said to them, “You are not my people,” it shall be said to them, “Children of the living God.” 11 And the children of Judah and the children of Israel shall be gathered together, and they shall appoint for themselves one head. And they shall go up from the land, for great shall be the day of Jezreel.

21 Say to your brothers, “You are my people,” and to your sisters, “You have received mercy.”

3:1 Old Covenant Indictment

31 And the LORD said to me, “Go again, love a woman who is loved by another man and is an adulteress, even as the LORD loves the children of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love cakes of raisins.”

3:2-4 Old Covenant Judgment

2 So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and a homer and a lethech of barley. 3 And I said to her, “You must dwell as mine for many days. You shall not play the whore, or belong to another man; so will I also be to you.” 4 For the children of Israel shall dwell many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or pillar, without ephod or household gods.

3:5 New Covenant Proclamation

5 Afterward the children of Israel shall return and seek the LORD their God, and David their king, and they shall come in fear to the LORD and to his goodness in the latter days.

Note: Hosea 1-3 begins with three cycles of the covenant lawsuit each containing three parallel sections.

                                                                   Cycle 1                                 Cycle 2                               Cycle 3

                                                              Hosea 1:2-2:1                     Hosea 2:2-23                       Hosea 3:1-5

  1. Old Covenant Indictment                 1:2-3                                    2:2-5                                     3:1
  1. Old Covenant Judgment              1:4-6, 8-9                              2:6-13                                   3:2-4

“Hosea, “The Not-Marriage of Hosea”

Jesus in the Old Testament

Pastoral Prayer

Sacrament of Communion

Sacraments are visible signs of the invisible grace of God - what Christ does by his Holy Spirit within us. Communion (also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist), as the distribution of the elements of bread and wine, symbolizes a meal. Communion is a sign of fellowship. That sign signifies more than just the future heavenly fellowship that is to come. The outward sign signifies the inner reality that sinners already experience fellowship with God in the Spirit because of Jesus. Communion is not a meal for good people. It functions as a renewing seal to desperate sinners of that fellowship we have with our holy and gracious God.

You will be invited to come forward. If you are not a Christian we encourage you to spend this time in reflection on what you’ve seen and heard in the worship. Children who have not received their first communion are welcome and encouraged to come forward with their families to witness their partaking. We invite children who are ready to make a public profession of faith in Christ to arrange a meeting with the elders, and thus become “communicants” at the Lord’s Table.

Pastor: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Pastor: Lift up your hearts!

People: We lift them up to the Lord.

Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Prayer of Thanksgiving and Words of Institution

Pastor: Let us proclaim the mystery of the faith:

People: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Hallelujah!

Pastor: Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed for us. Hallelujah!

People: Therefore, let us keep the feast.

Pastor: The gifts of God for the people of God.

Please let an usher know if it is difficult for you to come forward. We would be happy to serve you at your seat. All communion bread is gluten-free. All communion wine is made from  grape juice.

A communion prayer for those searching for the truth:

Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth and the life. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me the ability to follow you no matter what it might cost me. Give me an understanding for you that is coherent, convincing, and leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

Communion Song | How Deep The Father's Love For Us

We celebrate our communion in faith and song.

How deep the Father's love for us

How vast beyond all measure

That He should give his only Son

And make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss

The Father turns His face away

As wounds which mar the Chosen One

Bring many sons to glory

Behold the Man upon the cross

My sin upon His shoulder

Ashamed I hear my mocking voice

Call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that held Him there

Until it was accomplished

His dying breath has brought me life

I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything

No gifts no power no wisdom

But I will boast in Jesus Christ

His death and resurrection

Why should I from His reward

I cannot give an answer

But this I know with all my heart

His wounds have paid my ransom

Music and Lyrics: Stuart Townend

Departing Song | We Will Feast In The House Of Zion

We begin to end in faith and song.

We will feast in the house of Zion.

We will sing with our hearts restored.

“He has done great things,” we will say together.

We will feast, and weep no more.

We will not be burned by the fire; He is the Lord our God.

We are not consumed by the flood—upheld, protected, gathered up.

Chorus

In the dark of night before the dawn, my soul be not afraid;

For the promised morning, Oh how long! O God of Jacob, be my strength!

Chorus

Every vow we’ve broken and betrayed, You are the faithful One;

And from the garden to the grave, bind us together, bring shalom.

Chorus

Lyrics & Music: Sandra McCracken

*Benediction | Revelation 1:4-5 | Rev. Blake Arnoult

God sends us out with his blessing. A benediction is not a prayer. We don’t bow our heads. We lift them up and even lift up our hands to receive his blessing as we are sent out as participants in his mission to the city of man.

4 Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth.
