Order of Worship

August 14, 2022

*Call to Worship | 1 Corinthians 1:18 | Blake Arnoult

God invites and calls us into his presence to worship him.

18 The word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

*Song of Adoration | Let Everything That Has Breath

We begin by responding with praise to God for who he is and for what he does.

//Let everything that, everything that,

Everything that has breath praise the Lord//

Praise You in the morning, Praise You in the evening,

Praise You when I'm young and when I'm old.

Praise You when I'm laughing, Praise You when I'm grieving,

Praise You every season of the soul.

If we could see how much You're worth,

Your power, Your might, Your endless love,

Then surely we would never cease to praise You.

Chorus

Praise You in the heavens, Joining with the angels,

Praising You forever and a day.

Praise You on the earth now, Joining with creation,

Calling all the nations to Your praise.

If they could see how much You're worth,

Your power, Your might, Your endless love,

Then surely they would never cease to praise You.

Chorus

Music and Lyrics: Matt Redman

*Confession of Faith | 2 Corinthians 5:11; 14-21

With the church in history we confess a basic statement of what Christians believe.

11 Knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others…14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.

16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

*Song of Confession | We Fall Down/Praise The Name of Jesus

Psalms, hymns, spiritual songs are simply prayers that are sung. We respond in repentance and praise for God’s redemptive work in Christ.

We fall down, we lay our crowns, at the feet of Jesus.

The greatness of mercy and love, at the feet of Jesus.

And we cry holy, holy, holy

We cry holy, holy, holy

We cry holy, holy, holy

Is the lamb

Praise the name of Jesus, Praise the name of Jesus

He's my rock, He's my fortress

He's my deliverer, in Him shall I trust

Praise the name of Jesus

Music and Lyrics: Chris Tomlin | Roy Hicks, Jr.

Confession of Sin | Blake Arnoult

We fight the temptation to hide our sin and instead acknowledge it openly to God, but we do so in light of the grace offered in Jesus.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent, for the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon | Romans 1:16 | Blake Arnoult

The good news of the gospel is that we are forgiven in Jesus Christ. This assurance is based on God’s words of promise and it is therefore certain.

16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.

*Song of Response | Before The Throne of God Above

We respond in repentance and praise for God’s redemptive work in Christ.

Before the throne of God above

I have a strong, a perfect plea;

A great High Priest, whose Name is Love,

Who ever lives and pleads for me.

My name is graven on His hands,

my name is written on His heart;

I know that while in Heaven He stands

no tongue can bid me thence depart;

no tongue can bid me thence depart.

When Satan tempts me to despair,

And tells me of the guilt within,

Upward I look, and see Him there

Who made an end of all my sin.

Because the sinless Savior died,

My sinful soul is counted free;

For God, the Just, is satisfied

To look on Him and pardon me.

Halleluiah! Halleluiah!

Praise the One, Risen Son of God!

Behold Him there, the risen Lamb!

My perfect, spotless Righteousness,

The great unchangeable I AM,

The King of glory and of grace.

One with Himself, I cannot die;

My soul is purchased by His blood;

My life is hid with Christ on high,

With Christ, my Savior and my God.

Chorus

Music and Lyrics: C.L. Bancroft

Prayer of Thanksgiving

We offer our gratitude to God in prayer in response to his gifts and blessings to his people and ask that he make us faithful managers of these gifts.

Song of Thanks | May The Words Of My Mouth

As we offer our prayers so we also offer up our thanks in song.

May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart

be pleasing to You, pleasing to You.

May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart

be pleasing to You my God.

You're my rock and my redeemer

You're the reason that I sing

I desire to be a blessing in Your eyes.

Every hour and every moment

Lord, I want to be Your servant

I desire to be a blessing in Your eyes.

Music and Lyrics: Shane Barnard

Prayer for Christ’s Church

We lift up our requests to God knowing that he hears us when we pray.

*Reading of Scripture | 2 Corinthians 10:1-14 | Blake Arnoult

God reveals himself and his work and speaks to us his people through his Word.

1 I, Paul, myself entreat you, by the meekness and gentleness of Christ—I who am humble when face to face with you, but bold toward you when I am away!— 2 I beg of you that when I am present I may not have to show boldness with such confidence as I count on showing against some who suspect us of walking according to the flesh. 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, 6 being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete.

7 Look at what is before your eyes. If anyone is confident that he is Christ’s, let him remind himself that just as he is Christ’s, so also are we. 8 For even if I boast a little too much of our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I will not be ashamed. 9 I do not want to appear to be frightening you with my letters. 10 For they say, “His letters are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech of no account.” 11 Let such a person understand that what we say by letter when absent, we do when present. 12 Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.

13 But we will not boast beyond limits, but will boast only with regard to the area of influence God assigned to us, to reach even to you. 14 For we are not overextending ourselves, as though we did not reach you. For we were the first to come all the way to you with the gospel of Christ.

Sacrament of Communion

Sacraments are visible signs of the invisible grace of God - what Christ does by his Holy Spirit within us. Communion (also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist), as the distribution of the elements of bread and wine, symbolizes a meal. Communion is a sign of fellowship. That sign signifies more than just the future heavenly fellowship that is to come. The outward sign signifies the inner reality that sinners already experience fellowship with God in the Spirit because of Jesus. Communion is not a meal for good people. It functions as a renewing seal to desperate sinners of that fellowship we have with our holy and gracious God.

You will be invited to come forward. If you are not a Christian we encourage you to spend this time in reflection on what you’ve seen and heard in the worship. Children who have not received their first communion are welcome and encouraged to come forward with their families to witness their partaking. We invite children who are ready to make a public profession of faith in Christ to arrange a meeting with the elders, and thus become “communicants” at the Lord’s Table.

Pastor: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Pastor: Lift up your hearts!

People: We lift them up to the Lord.

Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Prayer of Thanksgiving and Words of Institution

Pastor: Let us proclaim the mystery of the faith:

People: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Hallelujah!

Pastor: Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed for us. Hallelujah!

People: Therefore, let us keep the feast.

Pastor: The gifts of God for the people of God.

Please let an usher know if it is difficult for you to come forward. We would be happy to serve you at your seat. All communion bread is gluten-free. All communion wine is made from  grape juice.

A communion prayer for those searching for the truth:

Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth and the life. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me the ability to follow you no matter what it might cost me. Give me an understanding for you that is coherent, convincing, and leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

Communion Song | Be Thou My Vision

We celebrate our communion in faith and song.

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart.

Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art.

Thou my best thought, by day or by night,

Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my wisdom, be Thou my true word;

I ever with Thee, and Thou with me, Lord.

Thou my great Father and I, Thy true son;

Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Be Thou my breast plate, my sword for the fight.

Be Thou my dignity, Thou my delight,

Thou my soul’s shelter, Thou my high tower

Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise;

Thou mine inheritance, now and always.

Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,

High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art.

True Light of heaven, when victory is won,

May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s Sun!

Heart of my heart, whatever befall,

Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

Music and Lyrics: Mary Elizabeth Byrne

Departing Song | Revive Us Again

We begin to end in faith and song.

We praise Thee, O God!

For the Son of Thy love,

For Jesus Who died,

And is now gone above.

We praise Thee, O God!

For Thy Spirit of light,

Who hath shown us our Savior,

And scattered our night.

Hallelujah! Thine the glory.

Hallelujah! Amen.

Hallelujah! Thine the glory.

Revive us again.

All glory and praise

To the Lamb that was slain,

Who hath borne all our sins,

And hath cleansed every stain.

All glory and praise

To the God of all grace,

Who hast brought us, and sought us,

And guided our ways.

Chorus

/Revive us again;

Fill each heart with Thy love;

May each soul be rekindled

With fire from above./

/Chorus/

Music and Lyrics: W.P. Mackay

*Benediction | 2 Corinthians 13:14 | Blake Arnoult

God sends us out with his blessing. A benediction is not a prayer. We don’t bow our heads. We lift them up and even lift up our hands to receive his blessing as we are sent out as participants in his mission to the city of man.

14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
